Practical AI skills for real-world impact

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the job market, reshaping industries, and redefining the skills employers are looking for. In five years, “70% of the skills used in most jobs will change, with AI emerging as a catalyst,” reports LinkedIn in its 2025 Work Change Report. In fact, one of the fastest-growing professions around the world is Artificial Intelligence Engineer.

To stay competitive in this changing landscape, it’s crucial to understand the basics of AI. That’s where Kiron’s Boost Your Career with AI program comes in. Developed in partnership with LinkedIn, the flexible, self-paced online program is designed for refugees and forcibly displaced people who want to understand the basics of artificial intelligence and how it’s shaping the future of work.

The course allows individuals without any tech background to gain practical AI skills and learn how to apply them in their fields. Over eight weeks, participants explore machine learning, generative AI, prompt engineering, and ethical decision-making while building connections with peers and expanding their professional networks.

As the program's final milestone, the learners put their knowledge into action through a capstone project. The challenge is to design an AI-powered tool or strategy to solve a real-world problem in the professional world. Using the prompt engineering techniques, generative AI knowledge, and ethical AI principles they learn throughout the course, participants showcase how AI can be used practically, responsibly, and creatively.

At the closing event, participants share their solutions and reflections. Each project includes a problem statement, a working concept, ethical considerations, and potential use cases. All the details are then published on the Kiron Campus.

To bring this learning to life, two participants, Arie and Fedrick, share how the program helped them build confidence, unlock new career paths, and explore the possibilities of responsible AI.

Arie’s new chapter in Germany

When Arie moved from the Philippines to Germany in 2019, she left behind not only her home but also a career that had defined her for years. Like many newcomers, she quickly realized that starting over in a new country wasn’t just about learning the language. It meant rethinking her path entirely. A seasoned HR professional, she suddenly found herself starting from scratch. “It left me feeling lost,” she recalls. “I couldn’t practice the career I had built my identity around.”

Though intrigued by Germany’s growing tech sector, breaking into the field felt almost impossible. “Most of the courses I found were just too expensive. I wanted to learn new skills, but didn’t know how to begin.”

When Arie first learned about Kiron, she was immediately interested in the Boost Your Career with AI program. For Arie, the structure and delivery of the course were transformative. “AI can feel overwhelming at first, but this course made it feel approachable and practical,” she says. “Each topic was taught by experts who made complex ideas easy to understand.” Through the program, Arie discovered how AI could intersect with her existing background. She learned how to write effective prompts, work with AI tools, and apply data-driven thinking to real-world problems.

“I’ve gained more than knowledge. I’ve also increased my confidence that I can build a meaningful career in tech, right here in my new home.”

Fedrick’s journey with Boost Your Career With AI

Originally from Mumbai, Fedrick also joined the course with extensive work experience across Europe and Asia. With a background in math, computer science, and management, he had worked in product leadership, customer experience, and corporate social responsibility. But even with two decades of professional experience, transitioning into the German job market was tough.

“I came across Kiron in 2024 when I was exploring new career pathways,” he explains. What stood out to him was the clarity and structure of the Boost Your Career With AI program. “There are so many AI trainings out there. This one helped me go from the basics of machine learning to building my own custom GPT, while also diving into ethics surrounding AI.”

For Fedrick, learning about AI was about more than staying current. It was about aligning with his deeper values. “One of my life missions is to bridge the leadership gap through coaching and mentoring,” he says. “And for that, I need to understand the tools shaping our future. With tools like LinkedIn Premium and a community that encourages growth, I feel better prepared for the next phase of my journey.”

Showcasing real-world AI solutions

At the program’s closing event, both Arie and Fedrick shared the results of their capstone projects—real-world tools designed to address current challenges using AI.

Arie introduced FairHire AI, a resume screening tool that aims to reduce unconscious bias in hiring. Her project uses structured prompts to evaluate anonymized resumes, compare them with job descriptions, and generate objective summaries, focusing solely on job-relevant data. FairHire AI is designed to plug into existing hiring systems and make the recruitment process more efficient, transparent, and fair.

Fedrick presented his ICF Cred Exam Prep Buddy, an AI-powered coaching tool for professionals preparing for the International Coaching Federation (ICF) credentialing exams. His GPT-based solution delivers dynamic coaching scenarios, evaluates ethical reasoning, and helps learners prepare for real-world coaching challenges, bridging a critical gap in the field with AI-driven precision and responsibility.

These projects are powerful examples of how learners not only understood the theory of AI but were also able to imagine and prototype meaningful, ethical tools for real-world applications.

What comes next
Both Arie and Fedrick continue to build on what they’ve learned. Arie even joined another Kiron program, the THRIVE Data Analytics path for forcibly displaced women. “Before these courses, AI and data analytics felt like distant concepts,” she says. “Now, I can write SQL queries, understand how AI is applied in HR tech, and I’m learning how to analyze real datasets.” Most nights, Arie dedicates two quiet hours to learning. “That time has become something I genuinely look forward to.”

In the long term, Arie hopes to work as a data analyst. “I’d love to combine my HR experience with data analysis, maybe through people analytics,” she says. “That would be such a fulfilling path.” She adds, “I also hope to speak German with confidence soon. One goal at a time, but I’m on my way.”

Fedrick continues to expand his network and apply his skills through leadership coaching and AI-driven projects. His advice to other Kiron learners is to foster self-improvement. “Know yourself,” he says, “and cultivate a growth mindset.”

Both learners offer a similar message to anyone starting a new chapter: Learning is never out of reach, and small steps can lead to big change.

“Kiron has taught me that growth is possible for all of us, no matter where we’re from or what we’ve faced,” says Arie. “You’re never alone on this journey. There’s a whole community cheering you on!”
